In my theory class, we've been reading what seemed to be complicated essays (nine pages long, lots of subclauses, etc.) about theory and such by Derrida and Foucault. As it turns out, these were lectures given by these French dudes. Our teacher explained that the French style of instruction is really just a professor entering the room and talking at the students for a long time with minimal if any, interaction. I thought this might explain my lecture course's section on Proust because the lady teaching this bit just talked and talked and works in the French department, but it looks like she's actually Dutch according to Google. What is your excuse, madame?! My attention-span is not made to watch you speak without some visual accompaniment or audience participation!
But she's gone now because we're reading The Odyssey, so hopefully Greek instruction differs slightly.
