Let me just share some sassy summaries from this helpful website I'm using while reading War and Peace

  • It’s a drunken frat party – or, you know, what a frat party would be for rich 19th-century aristocrats. Some guys are wrestling a bear (no, seriously, this was a thing). Others are betting on drinking contests.
  • Nikolai is all nuh-uh!  To which his dad is like, oh settle down – you kids today, always throwing a tantrum about something or other. He’s totally that dad who gave into all his children’s whining just to get them out of his hair.
  • Pierre is taken aback and impressed by Boris’s unexpected honesty. He gets all emotional over how he doesn’t want money either, and why won’t his dad see him, and also can he and Boris be BFFs from now point on?
  • Meanwhile, at the children’s end of the table, Natasha’s little brother double dog dares her to do something, and she agrees.  Natasha yells across the whole table of 80 guests, asking her mom what’s for dessert.  At first, everyone is totally OMG, she did not just do that! But she is so winning and charming that the guests just laugh at her impudence.
  • Pierre suddenly notices that everyone is treating him completely differently than usual – with respect.  Whoa. It’s almost like he’s about to become a super-rich count. Oh, wait, that’s exactly why. It’s kind of awkward for him, but he goes with it.
Thanks, shmoop.com!

(I totally would have summarized like this in high school.  It's almost a nostalgic experience even though I'm reading this book for the first time [and quite enjoying it, I might add!].)
