Weekend Activity: The Modern Hippies Market
Richmond Vegetarian Festival, take note: this festival is what you should aspire to emulate! Maybe it's my stereotype that vegetarians tend to be hippie-ish, but this market was like everything I hope to see when I go to the Richmond festival.
At first I couldn't even find Amsterdam Roest, the venue that also hosts art shows and other festivals throughout the year. The physical location given on the event page differed from the address provided, so I walked up and down Czar Peterstraat for a good long time. I did see some interesting street art, though.
Not street art, just beautiful architecture.
Puppies everywhere! Dogs are never on leashes in this country.
This is what looks like a community garden that borders the beach, and I think the products will be on sale at the City Farmer's Festival in September.
I didn't stay for very long because I got really warm, but I will definitely keep checking the venue and go to more of the events, hopefully with company next time :) I went back to the dorm and read on the roof for a few hours, which was lovely because there was shade and I could still enjoy the outdoors (and short stories I found in the common room).
Tonight I have a Skype date with my whole family (!), and tomorrow I'm hopefully going to get some errands done in the city center, including buying a freaking cord for my printer, picking up some vitamins at the vegan store, and getting my student card. Once I have my card, I want to check out the university's multiple libraries and also see if I can get into the buildings where classes will be held to try and find the rooms before the semester starts. If you miss the first class of a course, you are automatically dropped from it, so I don't want to risk losing my place!

Also not street art...not entirely sure what this is, actually. Possibly the van that Sid from Toy Story drives? Because there were lots of "altered" dolls hanging up inside of this thing.
After going back to my dorm to double-check the address, I finally found the market!
There was so much food! Paella, curry, wheatgrass smoothies, flatbread...it was so tempting to just buy all of it gorge myself. There were also plenty of stands selling dream catchers, clothes, bags, and other Tumblr-esq products.

My mission was to find a sweater for layering in the winter. I explored the tent of a "vintage store" called Rumors, which I took to be a sign as I have had good luck shopping at a thrift shop in Richmond with the same name. I found a lovely snuggly one for ten euro. It's wool/ alpaca/ acrylic, so it'll be warm and machine washable.

This was actually outside a restaurant near the venue, Rosa and Rita. Cool plants, but they don't look a very veg friendly eatery.

anybody's printer take this ink?
My printer came with two ink cartridges already and I don't feel like returning this because of the commute...I'll post also on my dorm's facebook page but just in case:
A Trip to Noord
Today I ventured to the north area of Amsterdam in search of a printer. The ride took me across two bridges, one of which had only one pedestrian lane open due to construction. There were scooters, bikes, joggers, and people going camping going in two directions in this one lane of the pedestrian area of the bridge. It could have ended very poorly for someone, but I saw no accidents nor did I cause any.
The route also went by some gorgeous fields, and even in some residential areas with no street names...I'll explain Amsterdam's street signs in another post (soapbox).
Bikey did an awesome job carrying my printer, as did my bike lock and my belt.
These bike lanes are multi-purpose.
This is a water statue of a man squirting water out of his eyes into a sheep's face. I don't even know.
Have to go into town this week to get a cord to hook my printer up to the computer (curse you, HP!), but tomorrow I'm looking to go to the Modern Hippies Market!

The Best Buy of Amsterdam is called Media Markt, with one of its two locations being in a large outdoor mall. I bought a printer and paper and ink, only to discover that the printer came with ink and that it did not come with a cord to hook it up to my computer. Now I know what I'll be doing Monday!
